“Story Sticks” are the first of my assemblages using found materials. I needed the timelessness of the gatherer process to find the right branch to be transformed into painted sculpture. I would drag down dead tree limbs from a nearby ridge, strip off the bark, and sand and bleach the wood until it dawned on me that I live near the California coastline that offers a bounty of driftwood—ocean-washed and ready to use. I seek to extend the life of the tree by coaxing out its essential character.
